Masseter Injections
About Masseter Injections
Masseters are the muscles found attached to the jaw which are responsible for the process of chewing.
Some individuals naturally have overdeveloped masseter muscles. However, they can become more prominent and larger from excessive clenching or teeth grinding, also known as bruxism.
Overdeveloped and large masseter muscles can give the lower portion of the face a squarer appearance. Treating the masseters with Botulinum Toxin Type A (anti-wrinkle injections) can essentially relax and weaken the muscle, and in turn reduce the size of the masseter muscle. As the masseter muscle shrinks in size, the face can appear more heart shaped in appearance.
Masseter Injections containing Botulinum Toxin Type A can be injected into overdeveloped jaw muscle, slimming the face and relaxing the jaw
Botulinum Toxin type A blocks the nerves from tightening the muscle, causing it to relax. This will reduce the size of the muscle and produce a narrower, tapered jawline. You can also expect more prominent cheekbones after this treatment
Optimal effects can be seen 4-6 weeks post treatment. However, it is not uncommon for a second treatment to be required to obtain the desired result. Like all anti-wrinkle Botox injections, results can last up to 3-4 months.
Although the masseter muscle is no longer able to contract with as much force, there should be some reduction in these symptoms. We always recommend visiting a dentist for a check-up should this be a concern.
Most patients do not experience any major side effects, but with all aesthetic procedures minor swelling, redness and bruising is always possible. As we are relaxing the masseter muscle which is responsible for chewing, some patients may find chewing more challenging in the first couple of weeks as the Botox takes effect. However, this is transient as surrounding muscles compensate and become stronger aiding the chewing process, giving normality to the bite. With extreme precision and delicate hands, we ensure you are comfortable during the procedure and do our very best to reduce potential side effects.
